Archive for the ‘GMO’ Category

(NaturalNews) Images are surfacing across the internet that illustrate the true dangers associated with genetically modified (GM) seeds, as admitted by the seeds’ manufacturers. The Food Warrior Network recently posted a photo of a seed package distributed by Monsanto India Limited, for instance, that warns users not to consume the seeds or use them as food, oil or animal feed, because they are poisonous.

This shocking photo is sparking controversy among many health advocates, particularly as the biotechnology industry ramps up the propaganda machine to reassure the public that GMOs are safe and no different from natural organisms. On the contrary, GM seeds are admittedly dangerous and not safe for human consumption, which means the widespread industry claim that they are substantially identical to natural seeds is wholly false.

“Caution: Seeds treated with poison,” reads the package warning accompanying the seeds. “Do not use for food, feed or oil purpose.”

You can view the telling image here:
http://www.facebook.com.

Many commercial seeds treated with health-destroying poisons

As it turns out, all sorts of commercial seeds, including some non-GM conventional seeds, bear similar toxicity warnings that the average consumer will never see. A seed treatment known as Axcess, produced by chemical giant BASF, comes with a warning that clearly prohibits using treated seeds and even plant greens from treated seeds as any type of food, either for humans or animals.

“Rapeseed [canola] greens and seed grown or harvested from Axcess-treated seed must not be used for feed or human consumption,” reads the warning pamphlet for Axcess, which outlines emergency procedures for how to handle accidental consumption. “Rapeseed grown and harvested from Axcess-treated seed is only for industrial use and cannot be used for edible oil or any other human/feed consumption.”

This BASF warning label can be viewed here:
http://www.agproducts.basf.us.

As you will notice, this same warning label contains restrictions on allowing animals to graze fields growing Axcess-treated crops. Wheat, barley, oats, rye, triticale, sorghum and millet crops treated with Axcess are so dangerous that they must be quarantined from animal access for at least 45 days after planting.

GMOs admittedly a threat to the environment, endangered species

If the general public had the chance to read these and similar warnings on package inserts for commercial seeds, it might cause more people to think twice about consuming all these transgenic derivatives that the chemical companies insist are safe. GMO labeling also suddenly becomes a whole lot more prudent in light of these revelations.

Even worse is the fact that using these chemical-treated seeds threatens both the environment and native species, including endangered species protected by federal statues. A package insert for seed treated with SIGNET 480 FS, for instance, which is manufactured by a company called Nufarm, explains that the treatment is harmful to fish, birds, endangered species and the environment.

“This chemical is toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates, birds, oysters and shrimp,” reads the insert, referencing a chemical known as “Thiram: Tetramethylthiuram Disulfide.” “This product may have effects on federally listed threatened or endangered species or their critical habitat in some [U.S.] counties,” it adds.

You can read the SIGNET 480 FS Seed Treatment package insert here:
http://www.nufarm.com.

So everything that real food advocates have been saying for years about the toxicity of GMOs and chemical-treated conventional seed crops appears to be true, based on these warnings. Humans, animals and the environment are all threatened by the use of GM seed technologies that involve deliberately tampering with seed structures, which in this case involves coating and treating them with harmful chemicals that destroy everything with which they come into contact.

http://www.naturalnews.com/

(NaturalNews) As mainstream society inches increasingly further away from the natural order of things, some scientists are busy hatching new methods of human reproduction that employ the same gene-altering techniques used by biotechnology companies like Monsanto. And according to new reports, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is fully on board with this brave new agenda, having recently met to discuss the future of what the mainstream media is now referring to as genetically modified (GM) human beings.

A chilling report by The New York Times (NYT) explains that a special FDA advisory committee recently met to discuss the approval of “radical biological procedures” that involve splicing and dicing the genetic blueprint of the human form. Referred to by the FDA as “mitochondrial manipulation technologies,” this disturbing concept, which is already being pushed as a viable fertility option, involves reprogramming the natural process of fetal development to supposedly create healthier babies with lower disease risk.

“The procedures involve removing the nuclear material either from the egg or embryo of a woman with inheritable mitochondrial disease and inserting it into a healthy egg or embryo of a donor whose own nuclear material has been discarded,” writes Marcy Darnovsky in a recent NYT editorial. “Any offspring would carry genetic material from three people — the nuclear DNA of the mother and father, and the mitochondrial DNA of the donor.”

Long-term viability of GM babies completely unknown

The script is essentially the same as it is for GM crops — natural organisms are inherently flawed, and in desperate need of tinkering by Frankenscientists with God complexes who think they have the capacity to improve upon nature. In this case, the goal is to mix and match the “best” eggs with hand-selected nuclear DNA to achieve the most desirable human beings.

But like GM crops and other GM organisms, nobody truly knows the long-term adverse effects of such tampering. As real science continues to peel back the layers of GMO deception, particularly at the crop level, exposing a wake of disease and death caused by human pride and arrogance, faux science continues to push forward with this massive global experiment in reshaping life at the genetic level.

“[T]hese procedures are deeply problematic in terms of their medical risks and societal implications,” adds Darnovsky. “Will the child be born healthy, or will the cellular disruptions created by this eggs-as-Lego-pieces approach lead to problems later on? What about subsequent generations? And how far will we go in our efforts to engineer humans?”

‘High-tech eugenics’ behind push to create ‘perfect’ human race

Despite how little is actually known about the immediate and long-term consequences of re-mapping the human genome, genetic scientists are busily working to achieve what maniacal dictators like Adolph Hitler only dreamed of accomplishing in their ethnic cleansing endeavors. Except, today, this agenda is disguised as “science” for the betterment of humanity.

“If we go down the road of deciding which genes are appropriate and which aren’t, that will never end,” writes one USA Today commenter about the issue. “One day, somebody who supposedly knows better than you will decide that a gene which tends toward a belief in the supernatural [for instance] is inappropriate.”

“In the hands of those who believe they know what is best for the world, they will use this as a way to eradicate such ‘dangerous’ beliefs.”

It is amazing to me that the whole world seems to be waking up and realizing the problem with our food industry.  It seems that conversations we couldn’t have just 10 years ago for fear our friends would think we were total “granola hippies” are happening more frequently.  The awareness and connection between the rise in chronic illnesses and obesity is finally sinking in.  In a recent and very interesting study, Ben Blatt of Slate Magazine revealed some interesting statistics about offerings at Wal-Mart vs. Whole Foods.

According to Blatt’s research, Whole Foods bans roughly 54% of Wal-Mart’s fare due to the presence, in its words, of “unacceptable ingredients for foods.” These 78 banned ingredients include everything from recognizable sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup to the tongue-tying dimethylpolysiloxane.

The choices being made by Whole Food and other natural grocers are now becoming much more mainstream and as a result, places like Wal-Mart may begin losing ground.

For example, it’s no surprise that shoppers would be hard-pressed to find a liter of Coke or bag of Doritos at Whole Foods, but Blatt discovers that even household brands ranging from Minute Maid lemonade to Cracker Barrel cheese are deemed unworthy for Whole Foods’ choosy clientele. Whole Foods claims these foods fall short of “safety, necessity, manufacturing methods and compatibility with our overall core values.”

97% of the soft drinks sold at Wal-Mart contain ingredients that Whole Foods considers “unacceptable.” If you ever wondered why a Whole Foods drink aisle makes you feel like you’re in a foreign country, well, there’s your explanation.

Wal-Mart’s “Great Value 100% Whole Wheat Bread” contains seven ingredients that Whole Foods scoffs at, including everything from high-fructose corn syrup to calcium propionate. Not one or two “unacceptable” items, but seven. All in a staple product that you have to imagine just flies off the shelves. We’re not talking about an obscure frozen dinner here; we’re talking about sandwich bread.

If consumers continue to become more educated through channels such as Natural News and other great sources of healthy living information, we can continue to demand real food from our stores and not ever have to settle for less.  Let’s celebrate the wins and keep fighting the good fight for our health and the health of our friends and families.

http://buzz.naturalnews.com/001151-GMOs-life-ecocide.html

(http://www.fool.com)Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) threaten to cause “an irreversible termination of life at some scale, which could be the planet,” according to Nassim Taleb, an author and distinguished professor of risk engineering at New York University who made a fortune after disasters like September 11 and the Great Recession.

Taleb recently made his feelings on GMOs known in a paper that is available to the public, though still in draft form. Taleb expresses concern not for the potential health effects of GMOs but for the risk they carry of ending all life on Earth. A single GM seed type has a miniscule chance — e.g., 0.1 percent — of causing the breakdown of the ecosystem that all life depends on, also called ecocide. With this one type of seed, it is highly unlikely that total ecocide would ever occur; however, with increasing amounts of GM seed varieties comes cumulative risk. For example, if 100 new GM seed types are produced, then that 0.1 percent chance suddenly becomes a 10 percent chance of global life-ending catastrophe.

The associated risks vary for different seeds, and a huge number of factors are involved, but what Taleb’s paper stresses is that these small odds add up over time so that “something bound to hit the [ecocide] barrier is about guaranteed to hit it.”

Yes, I eat bread.

It’s time to address the many questions I get about one of most wonderful and satisfying foods on earth – Bread! I don’t want to live without it and you shouldn’t have to either.

Bread is a really hot topic and is targeted as the root of many health problems. Overall, bread gets a bad reputation because grains are not easy for your body to digest, can overwork your pancreatic enzymes, contain the anti-nutrient phytic acid and an abundance of dreaded gluten. Also, our wheat crops in this country have been through some serious genetic manipulation to make them profitable for the food industry and less healthy for us.

The main problem with wheat (unless you have a gluten sensitivity) is that we as a culture eat too much of it in general. Just take a look at the typical American diet – a bagel for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and rolls or pasta for dinner. That’s a lot of grain in just one day. Even larger amounts would be consumed if we take into consideration common snacks like crackers and desserts like cookies. Additionally, commercially available grain-based products that line grocery store shelves and are served at restaurants are unhealthy. They are full of ingredients that are not food, like azodicarbonamide (the same chemical in yoga mats and shoe rubber), other chemical dough conditioners, added sugars, artificial flavorings or coloring and GMOs. Flour can be treated with any of the 60 different chemicals approved by the FDA before it ends up on store shelves – including chemical bleach! Also, the industrial processing destroys nutrients, such as Vitamin E and fiber. Remember, it only takes 4 ingredients to make bread – flour, yeast, water and salt, there’s really no need for all that other nonsense.

If you are like me, you probably want to enjoy the occasional piece of bread without subjecting yourself to of all these questionable ingredients. I’ve done a lot of research on bread brands, and have uncovered what can make grains really unhealthy and which ones make a nutritious addition to any diet because they are whole, unadulterated and real foods.

Examples of Store-Bought Breads To Stay Away From:

Natures Own Bread Ingredients

Martins Potato RollsSara Lee

Pepperidge Farm

ThomasEnglishMuffins

Udis

Arnold LIght Bread

The Health Wrecking Ingredients in Bread:

  • Dough Conditioners – these are unnecessary in traditional bread making and only make the process faster and cheaper for the food industry to make bread in big machinery. Many dough conditioners like azodicarbonamide (which is banned all over the world), DATEM, monoglycerides, diglycerides, sodium stearoyl lactylate are linked to health issues. Many dough conditioners start with manipulating fat – like soybean oil or corn oil, which is also most likely GMO. Nature’s Own, Arnold, Wonderbread, Martin’s, Sara Lee, and many other popular brands are guilty of using dough conditioners.
  • Preservatives – Bread is supposed to be fresh and eaten within a few days from baking unless frozen. If you see preservatives like calcium propionate, which is linked to ADHD, put the bread down and keep searching. Warning: Pepperidge Farm uses this ingredient to “retard spoilage.”
  • GMOs – Most commercially available breads contain one or many genetically modified ingredients like soy lecithin, soybean oil, corn oil, corn starch or soy flour. GMOs have not been tested long term on humans, however we know that the pesticides sprayed on them are absolutely toxic and considered to be poisonous. Some GMOs are created by inserting a toxic pesticide into the seed itself to make an insect’s stomach explode when they try to eat it.
  • Added sugar – This is where you really need to watch out. There’s nothing wrong with a little honey to bring out the sweetness in whole wheat bread, but most manufactures are using high fructose corn syrup, GMO sugar made from sugar beets, or some other artificial sweetener like “Sucralose” that are not the best forms of sugar and can pose health risks. Almost all commercially baked brands have some form of added sweetener – especially watch out for “light” breads, which often contain more added sugar like “Arnold Bakery Light.”
  • Artificial flavors and coloring – These ingredients are made from petroleum and are linked to several health issues like hyperactivity in children, allergies and asthma. They are easy to spot on the label because the FDA requires it. However, ingredients like “caramel coloring” can fool you into thinking this ingredient is a real food. Most industrial caramel coloring is created by heating ammonia and is considered a carcinogen when created this way. Martin’s potato rolls have Yellow #5 and Yellow #6, and Thomas’s English Muffins have caramel coloring.

Now before I share my top recommendations for the best (and healthiest) breads on the market – I should tell you the truth about how much bread I actually consume on a weekly basis. My diet consists of mostly plants like fruits, vegetables, seeds, beans and nuts along with the occasional meat, dairy or bread product. However, when I travel – I like to enjoy the local culture (think crossisants in France and pizza in Italy). I’m not about giving up whole food groups. My diet is about balance and choosing the most nutritious choices, but I do like to live a little and have my bread on occasion! At the grocery store, I buy the best of what’s available for my body and here are the choices I feel good about buying.

Thankfully, you don’t have to get out the bread maker or learn to make bread from scratch. There are many healthy bread options available – if you just know what to look for!

The Healthiest Breads On The Market

Sprouted Grains –  I love sprouted grains because they are technically vegetables. To sprout a grain, you just soak it until it begins to sprout into a little plant. These sprouts are then ground up to make bread. When you eat a grain that has been refined into flour, your body quickly metabolizes it like a sugar, which causes your insulin to spike. This can make you gain weight and contributes to diabetes and inflammation. For all of these reasons, I don’t buy bread that is primarily made from flours, especially “wheat flour” which is really just white refined flour. The sprouts are much more easily digested than starchy flour, and contain more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than whole grains. Phytic acid is destroyed when the grain sprouts, so your body is able to absorb the nutrients in these grains – which makes them that much better for you!

My favorite sprouted grain bread is the classic – Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Bread by Food for Life – it’s made up from six different organic sprouted grains and absolutely no flour! This combo of sprouted grains contains all 9 essential amino acids, which makes up a complete protein. I use their “Cinnamon Raisin” version to make this yummy breakfast casserole. There are no preservatives in these breads, so I keep them in my freezer and take out portions as I need them. I also love the sesame seed bread, whole grain tortillas, corn tortillas and english muffins by Food for Life. Hands down – they are the healthiest breads on the market. They are available in most health food stores and some conventional stores in the freezer section.

Other good sprouted breads are Manna’s Sunseed bread and Dave’s Killer Bread Sprouted Wheat, which are both a healthy combo of organic sprouted wheat and seeds.

Ancient Grains (spelt, quinoa, amaranth, millet, sorghum) & Gluten-Free – Unlike wheat, these grains are called ancient because they haven’t changed for thousands of years. They are packed with nutrients and many of these grains can be used to make gluten-free bread.  Just make sure that the bread you are buying is labeled as “gluten-free” if you are trying to avoid gluten – because not all ancient grains are gluten-free and they may be blended with wheat. Manna makes a good gluten-free bread with brown rice, sorghum, millet, amaranth, quinoa and chia seeds. Please note, almost all gluten-free breads contain added sugar in the form of honey, molasses, agave nectar or evaporated cane juice.

Last – but NOT LEAST – Remember to always choose bread that is made with real certified organic ingredients.  The wheat that is used to make most bread is heavily sprayed with pesticides and by choosing certified organic products you will avoid exposure to GMOs.

Now, let’s go break some bread with our loved ones and share this article with them. Everyone deserves good bread without chemical additives that can wreck their health.

The one tried and true worry I get about living an organic lifestyle is the cost. It’s likely the only immediate downside because everything else about living organically is pretty magical. Remember, non-organic food often contains cancer-causing hormones, immunity destroying anti-biotics and dangerous pesticides. Pesticides by nature are designed to kill, they are poison. So when given the choice, I don’t know why anyone could logically buy food with poison sprayed on it? Pesticides can cause neurological problems, cancer, infertility, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergies and asthma, wheezing, rashes and other skin problems, ADHD, birth defects and more. That’s why buying quality organic food and eating the most nutritious foods on the planet will save you BIG BUCKS down the road in medical costs, prescription drugs and doctor visits…like my friend Birke always says “We can either pay the farmer or we can pay the hospital” – It’s totally up to us.

Over 75 Tips On How to Eat Organic On A Budget…

In hopes to mitigate the initial money pains of buying organic, I want to share the top organic money saving ideas that I’ve gathered from my friends and family members. And, let me tell you, I learned a lot myself while putting together this list and combining everyone’s tips into one cohesive guide. I can’t wait to put some of these new ideas into practice. Let the savings begin!

FIND AND USE ORGANIC COUPONS

  • Check the websites of your favorite companies for coupons and special promotions, almost all of them have some.
  • Join your favorite company’s social media pages for special coupons and deals. For example, if you join Nutiva’s facebook page, they will give you access to a $10 dollar off coupon. This is perfect for stocking up on chia seeds, coconut sugar, coconut oil, etc. (They also run huge discount specials every Tuesday.)
  • Check out various organic coupon sites. Some of my favorite examples include Mambo SproutsSaving NaturallyOrganic DealsOrganicfoodcouponsHealthesavers, Organic Deals and Steals for organic food/natural living coupons, and money savings ideas.
  • Simply Organic who makes spices, seasoning mixes and baking mixes always have coupons on their website here – sometimes more than a dollar off.
  • Whole Foods has coupons here every week for various products throughout the store.
  • Earth Fare has coupons here every week for various products throughout the store.
  • Most stores take each others coupons, so don’t be afraid to use them all in one shopping trip at your most convenient or favorite store.

AT HOME AND IN THE KITCHEN

  • Stay organized. Plan out your meals for the week according to organic foods that are on sale and/or that you have coupons for.
  • Budget. Write out a weekly and monthly budget to help you keep track of both erratic spending and responsible spending. This will allow you to see your spending habits and help you prioritize purchasing organic food within your budget.
  • Do it yourself, rather than buy it. Make your own organic granola bars, kale chips, smoothies, juices to replaced store-bought with more overhead.
  • Learn how to portion and prioritize – it is a necessity to always buy organic meats and dairy products, and, therefore, learn to portion your consumption of these products each week. For example, keep meat to 4 ounces or less per serving.
  • Invest in a 4 stage water filter installed directly under your sink to avoid having to buy bottled water. Also, check the Environmental Working Group guide on choosing the right water filter for you.
  • Check out the book “Wildly Affordable Organic” for organic menu planning on $5 a day or less.

USE YOUR FREEZER

  • 9 times out of 10 the organic frozen produce at the store is cheaper than fresh, especially if the fruit or vegetable is out of season.
  • Freeze all left overs using inexpensive mason glass jars or silicone ice molds for smaller portions.
  • Freeze homemade cookie dough and other treats like almond freezer fudge, so you can have a treat ready to go in the appropriate portion size.
  • Buy local produce when in season and freeze to save for out of season, for example in the spring and summer spread berries on a sheet pan and freeze overnight and then store in jars for the fall and winter.
  • Double recipes and freeze leftovers, this works great with soups and stews.
  • Freeze core kitchen staples like butter, cheese and bread scraps for bread crumbs or homemade croutons.

MAKE CHOICES

  • Meat & dairy (animals products like chicken, eggs, cheese, butter, yogurt, milk, etc.) are the most important to buy organic because of the combined risk of pesticide, anti-biotic and cancer causing growth hormone exposure. Whatever you do, do not skimp here.
  • Reduce meat and dairy consumption if you cannot afford organic – One way to do this is to be vegan before 6pm, as Mark Bittman explains in his latest book. For example, have a green smoothie for breakfast with ezekiel toast, and then a large salad with lentils at lunch or a wrap made with hummus and then at night choose high quality meat in small portions.
  • Reduce amount of organic meat used by substituting half the portion with organic beans.
  • Buy a whole organic chicken for less per pound, vs. just the breast, legs or wings which are more expensive per pound. You can use the carcass to make your own chicken broth.
  • Use the “Clean 15” and “Dirty Dozen” lists available on ewg.org to help you navigate which products to buy organic (or take with you when you travel). For example, if you have a choice between more expensive organic red peppers and less expensive conventional asparagus – choose the asparagus. Asparagus naturally repel pests allowing it to be grown with minimal pesticides. Include red pepper in your diet when it is in season or you can find it cheaper at another grocery store.
  • Do not buy pre-washed and ready to eat fruits and veggies, as they can cost twice as much.
  • Skip conventional Starbucks (and other coffee shops). Buy organic coffee and tea such as: Larry’s Beans Organic Coffee and Numi and make it yourself. This will actually save you time in the morning too.
  • Eat out only twice a week – eating organic at home is significantly less expensive than eating at organic restaurants.

BUY IN BULK

  • Take advantage of the ‘buy one get one free’ sales or buy one get the other for a discounted price. You never know when it will go on sale again, so make sure to take advantage of it and store for later use. (This trick only works if you really love the product and it is a staple at your home – otherwise this could lead to wasted food)
  • Always buy packaged staples on sale
  • Buy unpackaged foods from bulk dispensers – I personally save a ton of cash by doing this, I buy everything from oat groats, to nuts, to dried fruit and lentils.
  • Bring measuring cups with you to the grocery store if you are buying from bulk containers. That way you can get exactly the amount you need for a specific recipe and you won’t be paying for extra.
  • Buy smaller organic spice packets or jars, old spices loose their medicinal qualities so it is smarter to buy in smaller quantities. For example, Earth Fare has little pre-portioned tiny ziplocs with herbs and spices available at the fraction of costs compared to a whole jar.
  • Buy the whole animal and freeze the portions you don’t use. I personally know someone who is on a budget and does this all the time. You can also do this by contacting your local farmer and then splitting the cost with a group.
  • To satisfy a sweet tooth, skip the full size packages of candy and chocolate. Buy a few pieces in the bulk section, for example go for a few pieces of organic dried fruit or 10 chocolate covered almonds.
  • Find out what foods are in season and buy those in bulk, as they are significantly cheaper.
  • Join a buying club with your neighbors, friends or family and buy large quantities at a discount. For example, United Buying Clubs (unitedbuyingclubs.com) serves more than 3,000 clubs in 34 states through its website.

OrganicShoppingList

BUY ONLINE

  • Green PolkaDot Box – This service delivers organic and non-GMO food directly to your door step. It is membership club like Costco and Sam’s Club with some of the lowest prices available for organic staples, meat, dairy and other goods. (FYI – become a club member by Friday, May 25, 2012 to get 10% off the first order with the code “FOODBABE”).
  • Amazon – One of my favorite shopping sites, because they basically have every brand available and ship free over $25.00.
  • VitaCost – Another low cost website that has a wide variety of organic and healthy foods, vitamins, etc.
  • Herbs Pro – Another low cost website that has a wide variety of organic and healthy foods, vitamins, etc.
  • Before you check out online, visit Retail Me Not for online promotional codes and discounts for all your favorite online stores and sources.

CHOOSE ORGANIC BRANDS THAT SAVE YOU MONEY

  • Choose more inexpensive grocery store brand products like Trader Joe’s, Earth Fare, 365 brand, ShopRite, Wegman’s, Kroger, Publix, Harris Teeter. Regardless of the brand, they are all required to follow the same guidelines set forth by the USDA organic certification program if they contain the USDA organic seal and chances are that you won’t be able to tell the difference between a brand name and store brand.
  • Join grocery store loyalty programs for discounts. For example, if you join Earth Fare’s tomato bank program, you get a dollar back for every 100 points you earn.
  • Use your rewards cards always. Most convenient stores, grocery stores, and drug stores allow you to sign-up for a rewards or savings card that will help you save money on a few of your items at the checkout counter. Even if this time of purchase does not contain organic food, the extra money that you are saving on your items can be put towards buying it when need be.
  • Always remember that if you are not satisfied with your organic product, most grocery stores and organic food companies offer you money back guarantee. This also works for companies you bought in the past that you are now boycotting like Kraft’s Back to Nature

    :)

  • Check Ebay‘s section for food and beverages, prices are really cheap!

BUY LOCAL

  • Local food can be significantly cheaper than food shipped from miles away.
  • Find a farmers market near you through LocalHarvest.org or the USDA – get to know your local farmers, create a personal relationship and negotiate prices.
  • Ask your farmer about his farming practices. Some farmers do not spray pesticides on their crops but do not seek USDA certification to keep prices lower.
  • Be the last person to leave the farmer’s market. Farmers will likely cut their prices at the end of the day, so they do not have to take their produce back to the farm.
  • Buy a share in a community-supported agriculture CSA program. It’s nice to contribute to a local farm’s operating expenses while getting a weekly box of fresh fruits and vegetables.

GROW YOUR OWN FOOD

  • Plant an herb pot in your kitchen or somewhere convenient so you can always have fresh herbs on hand. Organic herbs are one of the most overpriced items at the grocery store.
  • Follow these tips from The Organic Consumers Association to grow organic food inside your home year round.
  • Check this amazing guide that details out all the options and information you need to start urban farming at your home regardless of how much space you have.
  • Once you start growing produce, give herbs, fruits and vegetables as gifts to family and friends (saving money on other material objects they might otherwise not use or collect).
  • Remember to buy non-GMO seeds, check out Sow True Seed for lots of options.
  • Check out growing lessons learned from 100 Days of Real Food.
  • Learn how to can the produce you grow, here’s a how-to-guide for strawberry jam.
  • Get a couple of chickens and hatch your own eggs. One friend of mine has so many eggs she doesn’t know what to do with them. You could also sell them to your neighbors or give them as hostess gifts.

TRAVEL WITH ORGANIC FOOD

  • On a road trip use EatWellGuide.org to find out where to buy local, organic and sustainable foods from point to the other.
  • Remember, a pricey restaurant doesn’t equal organic or quality food – going to a grocery store and picking up some organic food will save you money and your health.
  • Bring your food with you in a cooler – even if you are flying. Did you know you can check a cooler?
  • Bring organic tea with you and ask for hot water. A cup of tea can cost up to $5 dollars, vs. $1 dollar you would tip the barista or server.
  • Bring filtered water with you wherever you go in a reusable safe water bottle so you never have to buy expensive bottled water.
  • Always carry snacks like homemade trail mix in your purse or bag for emergencies.
  • At the movies, bring your own organic popcorn and snacks if they do not offer them. There is no reason to pay a premium for conventional food.

STOP WASTING FOOD

Quick fact: Americans waste an estimated 1,400 calories of food per person EVERY SINGLE DAY.

  • Raw nuts and flours should be kept in the refrigerator to last longer without going rancid.
  • Line your refrigerator’s crisper drawer with paper towels to absorb excess moisture. They’ll absorb excess moisture which will help keep produce longer.
  • To repel bugs, place a bay leaf in containers of rice, flour and pastas.
  • Buy and keep bananas separated from one another, they spoil slower.
  • Turn almond butter, yogurt, sour cream, tahini and cottage cheese containers upside down when stored in the fridge – this creates a vacuum seal, keeping them fresh longer
  • Do not throw away nut meal from homemade nut milk – use it for smoothies, baked goods like biscotti or to make nut flours by placing the pulp on a baking sheet and drying it out in a 250 degree oven or dehydrator.
  • Repurpose vegetable pulp from juicing to add fiber to soups, smoothies or make crackers or bread.
  • Placed limp celery, baby carrots and radishes in water with a slice of potato to make them crunchy again.
  • Keep all organic citrus fruits in the fridge – they will last up to 1-2 weeks longer.
  • Do not wash organic dark leafy greens or berries until they are ready to consume.
  • Store herbs, spring onions, asparagus upright in a large glass filled with an inch of water
  • Learn tips and recipes on how to use over the edge food. For examples, panzanella with stale bread, and banana bread with overripe bananas.
  • If you know you will not have a chance to eat it, freeze food before it goes bad.
  • Choose to eat less, use a smaller plate to help you control the amount of food you might eat or end up wasting.
  • Compost all food waste to put nutrients back in your garden (you will spend less on fertilizer).

If you know someone who’s struggling to buy organic because of cost, or that needs a little extra cash (like most of us!), please share this post with them.

Thanks for spreading the word – let’s make buying organic easier for everyone!

(NaturalNews) The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is scheming to criminalize state-by-state GMO labeling laws in a deviously evil effort to keep consumers ignorant of what they’re eating. Remember, the GMA is the same organization that got caught running an illegal money laundering scheme in Washington state, secretly funneling money from big food manufacturers into a campaign to defeat GMO labeling initiative I-522.

Now the GMA is pushing legislation at the federal level to not only outlaw GMO labeling laws at the state level, but also to get the FDA to declare GMOs as “natural” so that foods made with GMOs can claim “all natural” on their labels. A petition filed with the FDA by the GMA states, “GMA will be filing a Citizen Petition early in 2014 that asks the FDA to issue a regulation authorizing foods containing ingredients derived from biotechnology to be labeled ‘natural.'” (SOURCE)

“Monsanto and giant food companies are scheming behind the scenes to introduce a bill in Congress that would kill mandatory state GMO labeling efforts and replace it with a gutted version of a bill to preempt states’ rights and give the illusion of serious regulation,” reports Food Democracy Now, which also calls the plan “devious” in nature.

How evil can they get?

With these anti-transparency, anti-consumer, anti-American actions, the GMA now firmly puts itself in the same evil camp as Monsanto itself. Because the right to know what we are eating is a fundamental human right, the GMA’s actions clearly define it as an anti-human rights group. In the history of human rights violations, we’ve seen a long list of evil efforts to silence certain groups of people and keep them ignorant: Women were denied the right to vote, slaves were denied the right to “personhood,” and in the Holocaust, Jews were denied the right to life itself. Now the GMA joins that haunting history of human rights violators by insidious working to deny all people the right to know what they are eating.

The GMA solely represents the profit interests of dishonest, deceptive food manufacturers who sell toxic poisons, not the interests of food consumers, and it has a long established history of using deceptive tactics to make sure its members can continue to hide their toxic poisons in their food products.

The GMA is, in essence, a “pro-poison” industry group that wants consumers to unknowingly eat more poisons in their food. The GMA should not merely be ashamed of itself; it should be publicly exposed as an evil food industry group whose actions, if successful, may result in hundreds of millions of Americans being harmed by unknowingly eating unlabeled poisons in their food.

Your help is needed to stop this group from achieving its truly evil aims in Washington. Here’s what you can do to help:

Tweet this story, Facebook it, email it, share in whatever way you can. The GMA needs to be halted by a barrage of active consumers who rise up and shout, “ENOUGH! We demand to know whether the products we buy contain GMOs!”

After all, the right to know what we eat is a fundamental human right. Don’t let the anti-human rights “GMA” group keep you in the dark over what you’re eating. We must not let evil prevail in this fight for food transparency!
